Breakdance describes a number of dance forms which originated among young Afro and Puerto Rican Americans in the 1970s and which mostly embody acrobatic features. For many young people, Breakdance offered an alternative to the criminal gangs organizing on the streets of poor city districts and, at the same time, a perspective for escaping from the everyday life of the ghetto. The origin and development of Breakdance as an element of Hip Hop connects it inseparably with this culture. This also applies to the Breakbeats, instrumental sections of the piece which are artificially lengthened by the repetition of two identical tracks on two decks, in order to provide the Breakdancer with an ideal rhythmic background.
